Wow, you’re engaged and most likely the first thing you can’t wait to do is go shopping for that perfect wedding dress you’ve been thinking about and seeing in the magazines!  We always advise our brides, that it’s an exciting time, but be sure you do a little homework before you go so that your experience will live up to your expectations.  For additional wedding gown buying strategies you may purchase Deb McCoys, bridal consultant from the American Academy of Wedding Professionals, downloadable book, Wedding Gown Glory.

First, have a clear idea of what your budget is and when you get to the salon or store, stick to that budget with the sales consultant.  Nothing can cause more distress to a bride than to fall in love with a dress that she can’t afford!  Second, once you make your selection be sure that everything is clearly documented on the receipt, price, payment terms, the design, style, size, alterations, delivery/pick-up date/time, wedding date, your name, etc., you get the picture!  We also recommend, calling back the store after you place your order a couple of weeks later to check that everything has been properly documented with the order to ensure the paperwork is flowing correctly.

It is always our hope that our brides have given themselves at least 8-12 months lead time to purchase their gowns, if not then you must check on delivery options to ensure your gown will be ready in time.  Lastly, we always recommend that while it can be fun to bring your whole “posse” of friends and family along with you to try on dresses, this can actually cause quite a problem for many brides.  Too many differing opinions and too many people to “please” can sometimes leave many brides very confused and the appointment ends up in chaos with a very disappointed or worse a bride in tears!  It’s much better to bring just one or at the most two close friends or family members whose input you trust and value the most to the appointment.  Everyone else will get to be surprised at the wedding!

Now that the appointment has been staged, its important to know a little bit about the styles of dresses available and what might best fit your body type prior to your trip to the salon.  Here are the choices in brief:

Empire:  For the petite or smaller busted bride:  Dress where the seam of the waist falls right below the bust, elongating the torso.

A-Line:  Compliment most figures:  This silhouette is narrow at the top, hugs the rib cage and extends out like and “A” along the body.  It adds height and minimizes hips.

Ballgown:  Very flattering around the waist:  This cut uses a dropped waist opposite a full skirt.  Visualize Cinderella at the ball.

Princess:  Relative of the A-line:  These seams however run from the neckline of this cut through the waist, skimming down the hips.  This cut universally slims and lengthens the torso.

Mermaid:  A very constructed look which hugs the curves of the torso and flares out at the knees and can be very enthralling.  Must be very confident to carry this look off.

Sheath:  Flattering for the petite, tall or slim bride. Think Breakfast at Tiffanys, Audrey Hepburn style.  This style shows the body without showing a lot of skin, as the darts and seams are placed to emphasize all the right spots.

Lastly, don’t skimp on undergarments!  It’s your big day, you paid a lot for your dress, make sure you get the right look for underneath!  Now go shopping, girl, what are you waiting for!!!
