Unity Sand Ceremony - By Karen Hong Photography
At this recent May Garden wedding in Sacramento, CA, Karen and Denis, while celebrating their wedding vows ,were also celebrating the blending of their two families. They chose to honor this by the creative alternative method of using colored sand, rather than the traditional unity candle, to reflect the joining of their families. The end result of their effort can be seen in this beautiful photograph by Karen Hong. To see more from Karen, go to Karen Hong Photography. The Unity Sand Ceremony is pretty, interesting, and is very appropriate for this type of occasion, especially for an outdoor setting, as sometimes candles can be tricky in the outdoors! The basic premise is simple to follow, in that each family member is represented by a different color of sand and each is assigned a separate vase at a table in the ceremony. There is a main separate vase, then, which all members at the assigned time pour their sand into, at alternating times, to create the colorful, “blended” vase. This completed vase of sand represents the new “blended” family, rich and full of new color, representing their new life as a “new” family. While the sand ceremony is taking place, special music can be played or a reading can be selected to further customize or enhance the moment. It really can be a great and beautiful way to signify a new beginning for a family.
