Candy "Root Beer" Float

Candy "Root Beer" Float

One of the great things about planning a themed event is letting the spirit of the event dictate the tone and the “flavor” of the decorations used to enhance the feeling in the room or event space. This was definitely the case at this surprise birthday party which took on a 50’s inspired rock-n-roll theme set in the neighborhood soda shop.  The main colors of the event were bold hot pink and turquoise on black and white backgrounds as this was a party for a certain lady turning 60 years young.  Many of the basic decorations for this 50’s décor can be found at Shindigz.com.  However the decoration we had the most fun “replicating” from the time was the old standard “root beer” float as seen in the picture to the left.

Clearly, these are not actual floats at all, but glass mugs and ice cream parfait glasses chuck-full of candy.  The bottoms are filled with Chocolate “Whopper” malt balls representing the “root beer,” the tops are colored rainbow cotton candy in shades of pink, yellow, and blues that perfectly complimented the color scheme of other decorations and the main décor in the room.  To top off the “float” we added a red gummi candy cherry, mimicking a maraschino cherry!

During the party, we used most of these mugs and glasses as balloon anchors, but as a bonus, we sent the guests home with goodie bags and at the end of the party they dug into the candy floats and emptied them into their bags.  Another idea would have been to include them in their entirety as a party favor if your guest count and budget can accommodate this.  We did save our client‘s budget on this particular item by buying the glass mugs and glasses at a local thrift shop.  We saved money and recycled!  To see more pictures from this great party, go to our picture gallery, you may catch a glimpse of Elvis…..
