After slaving over my own wedding invitation design, I realized a month or so before they were supposed to be mailed that computer printed labels just weren’t going to give me the feel I wanted. So I hit up my local Borders, found an intro to calligraphy book, and taught myself the basics.
I ended up LOVING the process, and have been practicing my calligraphy ever since, on many a friends’ wedding invitation. This Spring I decided to get some formal training and with a simple search online, found an Adult Ed program in my neighborhood with all kinds of amazing classes, including calligraphy!
My first class was last Tuesday, and at least one third of the group was made up of brides to be. It got me thinking: how many other amazing classes are there out there for the creative bride? As it turns out, tons!
Here are just a hand-full of great art and craft classes in the Sacramento area this Spring:
The Paper Garden
2601 El Paseo Lane
Sacramento, CA 95821
The Paper Garden offers all kinds of craft classes, including “A Wedding To Remember,” which focuses on hand-made invitation design.

Kerry Van Dyke
733 Santa Ynez Way
Sacramento, CA 95816
Teaching art since 1986, Kerry Van Dyke offers lessons in a variety of art mediums, including calligraphy, water color, oil painting, and more.

Paper Source
740 Hearst Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94710
For the ultimate do-it-yourself tutorial, there’s no place better than Paper Source. The closest store location to Sacramento is in Berkeley, but I assure you it’s worth the drive. Unfortunately, the store just finished up with a wedding workshop and won’t be offering other one for the next month or so.
While you’re waiting for their next wedding workshop to be posted, check out some of Paper Source’s ready-made do-it-yourself kits. They’re so easy, you won’t need a class to show you how. Here are some of my favorite ideas:
Do-It-Yourself Flower Bouquets
Drop-Spine Boxes and Book Binding Kits
** This is a great bridal party gift idea
Happy crafting!
